Oath of Enlistment
It has been quiet a few years since I took my oath, “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…” Technically, I’m still under it until 2012. It’s cool, I don’t mind and take pride that I was given an opportunity to offer my services and serve in the best navy in the world.
But, this is not about me. Yesterday I was at the Buffalo MEPS photographing special Oath of Enlistment. The Commander of MEPS is pretty cool. The coolest skipper one could ask for.
The reason it was a special occasion was because of a special guest who delivered oath. The US Navy Captain Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, former NASA astronaut, delivered oath to the recruits. Her son, Michael Piper, was going through the processing at this station. She was kind enough to offer her time to deliver the oath and make the occasion even more special for the recruits.
It was really nice chatting with her afterward. Learned a thing or two about going to space. Not sure I’ll ever use that knowledge, but it was interesting anyways. My brain is full of useless information that I don’t ever use, but I still enjoy having it in there just in that rare case I might need it.
